National Disability Employment Awareness Month Awards Ceremony

October 2008

Over 260 businesses, agency representatives, and guests celebrated the National Disability employment Awareness Month at the beautiful Carlyle on-the-Green, Bethpage State Park. Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy*s keynote address was touching and heartfelt. She stressed the importance of work and encouraged the businesses to give qualified job seekers with disabilities the opportunity to be productive. Seventeen businesses from Long Island were nominated to be recognized for their commitment to hiring, and promoting employees with disabilities.

This year, two businesses from the region were chosen as Statewide winners. Golden Apple Candy Co. and Oceanside Institutional Industries, Inc. were recognized in the categories of Entrepreneur and large size companies respectively. Other winners were: Aramark Corporation, Babies R US, Best Yet Market Corporation, Centralized laboratory Services, CVS Pharmacy, Designatronics, Inc., Hunter Business School, NC Dept of Records Management, Ruby Tuesdays, Inc., Sears, Small Appliance. Co.,
Stop and Shop, and Tilden Brakes.

The main sponsor of the event was Rosicki, Rosicki & Associates, P.C. Other sponsors were: Telephonics, CVS, CBVH, and Nassau Placement Network.

The Long Island Working Partnership had its 21st annual awards ceremony on Friday October 20th at the Melville Marriott Hotel. The partnership, a VESID consortium brings together the four entities of business, service provider agencies, educational institutions, and government towards advancing employment opportunities for job seekers with disabilities and as a resource for business.

Eighteen businesses in various categories were recognized for their excellent inclusive employment policies and exemplary efforts in hiring, retaining, and promoting employees with disabilities. They were great examples of organizations, which make reasonable accommodations a natural process.

John Kanas, President and CEO of North Fork Bank delivered the keynote address. His naturally warm and sincere style complimented the joyous atmosphere. Mr. Kanas acknowledged the aging population of Long Island and that one out of every five individuals will have a disability in the near future and that the business community cannot ignore this group. North Fork Bank, not a novice to employing individuals with disabilities, celebrated this event with a group of its employees and families.

Steven Dixon, an employee with a disability shared his amazing story of a struggling individual that, when given the opportunity, was able to exceed everyone’s expectations. Mr. Dixon gave thanks to his family, counselors at VESID and BOCES and to his employer Patrick Murtha, of Triumph Accuation Systems, LLC for his achievement. His was a touching delivery that came from the heart and touched the audience.

The top four runner-ups were: Borders Book Store, Sears, Roebuck and Company, Lighthouse Harley Davidson, and JR’s Snacks.

The master of ceremony was Q104.3’s Program Director Bob Buchmann. The event was sponsored by: Rosicki, Rosicki and Associates, CVS Pharmacy, 1-800-Flowers, and A.D.D.A.P.T.
